California State Los Angeles Students Use CATIA TeamPDM
By Professor Virgil Seaman and Jeriel Nutter, Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Technology, College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology

During the Fall quarter at Cal State Los Angeles, students in two different classes are gaining exposure to Product Data Management (PDM). Students in a daytime 3D Solid Modeling class (using Pro/Engineer 2001) and in an evening Advanced Solid Modeling class (using CATIA V5) are beginning to use TeamPDM1 to manage their files (part, assembly, drawing) in their class. In a multi-CAD environment like a college or university, TeamPDM with its capabilities will help us to infuse the use of PDM into the curriculum as a management tool and make students familiar with PDM prior to entering the workforce upon graduation. The first phase of implementation involves students learning to use TeamPDM on their individual workstations while a dual processor Dell server is being set up and tested specifically for TeamPDM. Phase II will involve migrating to using the Dell server as students, professors and visitors to our facilities will see the importance of Product Data Management. Cal State Los Angeles intends to use TeamPDM in the classroom and for student projects outside the classroom such as our Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Supermileage vehicle and for the Manufacturing Challenge Contest held each year by SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) at WESTEC.
