Education and Industry: A Partnership that Works

The College of Aeronautics has entered into an internship program with Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC) in Bethpage, NY. This program resulted from discussions between the engineering technologies department at the College and the Vehicle Design Department of NGC, headed by Bill McGloin. This partnership offers students the opportunity to gain invaluable version four (V4) experience while working in a professional setting. NGC benefits from the students' familiarity with version five (V5) and the assistance of an additional manpower source.

The 20 students selected for the program are seeking degrees in engineering technology that includes courses in CATIA V5. Students are permitted to work 17 hours per week and selected times commensurate with the College's class schedules. They must complete projects within a predetermined schedule. NGC provides transportation to and from the campus on the established dates according to the predetermined schedule.

Since students have only V5 experience, there was an initial learning curve to be established as part of the internship. This consisted of three weeks of CATIA V4 training at NGC, using the SOLIDS workbench.

The task is to create parts from the E2C-A (Advanced Hawkeye) that will eventually be used as part of a global electronics database using ENOVIA VPM. These parts were created from existing mylar drawings, using CATIA V4. The two-dimensional drawings/three-dimensional parts were loaded in stages by type (i.e. primary structure, secondary structure, cooling systems, flight controls, hydraulic/electrical lines, etc.) Interns received college credit plus an hourly stipend.

The students are evaluated based on their performance, including quantity, quality and attitude toward pursuing the tasks. NGC has evaluated their performance on a monthly basis using internally generated metrics. The ongoing students' exposure to an industrial environment has proved valuable for their future employment at NGC or other users of CATIA.

At the COE Spring 2003 Conference & TechniFair, there was a break out session conducted on the recently announced CATIA Student Version. This presentation represented the culmination of three years of planning and development effort to bring the CATIA Student Version to market. The session, AC-1 CATIA Student Version for HEAT Schools, provided details on the history and delivery of this exciting new offering for the academic environment. The objective of this product is to put the HOME BACK IN HOMEWORK for CATIA HEAT students.

The CATIA Student Version characteristics are:

  • Standard CATIA P1 configuration for Mechanical Design
  • Standard CATIA hardware and software requirements for supported Windows environments.
  • Standard product documentation (not initially available, but will be in future releases)
  • Attractively priced, payment via credit card
  • Ordering and fulfillment through ENGINEERING.com.
  • Keys delivered via E-mail
  • No support from DS or IBM

After a successful pilot program at Wichita State University, Technical High School of Ingolstadt (Germany) and University of NSW (Australia), the CATIA Student Version was announced in a joint IBM/DS/ENGINEERING.com press release on February 11, 2003.

The CATIA Student Version provides engineering students with design tools to perform 3D part and assembly design, generate production drawings, create wireframe construction plans and work concurrently with other students in a virtual environment, from school or home. Engineering students at more than 1,200 universities around the world that use CATIA will have access to CS1 in order to learn about and gain knowledge to a variety of advanced hardware and software technologies, thus preparing them for careers as professional engineers.

To purchase the CATIA Student Version, eligibility requirements must be met. A student must:

  1. Be in good standing at the HEAT institution
  2. Be enrolled in a minimum of three (3) credit hours in a degree seeking program related to the CATIA HEAT curriculum
  3. Be otherwise engaged in a HEAT project

In addition, the purchase must agree to the terms of the IBM's License Agreement.

The initial delivery of the CATIA Student Version is at the CATIA V5R10 level. Updates matching the standard CATIA product line incremental releases of new function are planned. For further information on the CATIA Student Version, check out these URLs:

Based on the positive feedback from those who attended the COE Spring session, a Fall session is being planned. The intent of the Fall Session will be to review requirements and provide a composite of the students' experience with the product.
