Education is Bliss?
By Dave Ballard, COE Board of Directors
The process of learning is different for adults than it is children. The reasons as to the how and why objectives are absorbed and retained are tempered by experience and a critical eye for logic as to what is considered important to them. Individual preferences also vary greatly as to the method use to receive the knowledge. Some prefer self-paced study, while others require directed learning. Similarly, the COE organization is also learning what works and does not in the process of nurturing the attendee interest level and knowledge capture.
Currently, the method employed is attempting to exploit the tremendous wealth and experience already existing in member companies. In some cases, this can be a painful for presenters, not because they don't have the knowledge or desire to share their thoughts, but because they don't have experience in organizing or have a fear of public speaking. It is our objective to add value and depth to content and help make the participation process a painless experience.
As a result of attendee input regarding existing conference structure and perceived confusion, a problem has been identified that there are times when an attendee has unknown expectations regarding the value that person will receive from attending a given event at the conference. The symptoms suggest interchanging or inconsistent use of terminology is a catalyst for this situation. Our solution for this is a simplification of the definitions, with the intent of providing a consistent approach to the learning process. Therefore, we will not only focus in on the content, but delivery methods and organization as well.
I am confident that many of you are shaking your head in agreement right now, and can relate to confusion and frustration over expectations of workshops and training sessions, and hands on room, and demonstrations, and academies, and more. As we evolve over the coming years, the new definitions will center on Briefings, Demonstrations, and Workshops. Briefings are intended to be lecture style formats, where a speaker will provide thought, insight and strategy. Demonstrations will be just that, for product capability, or for showing how a process works. Workshops will be actual hands on activities, to touch and feel a piece of equipment, or experience how that software behaves.
The 2001 Spring conference in Anaheim will be the start of the gentle transition to this simplification, as you will note the presence of Seminars and Product Workshops in addition to the traditional Breakout Sessions everyone has come to expect. By the 2001 Fall conference, it is expected the COE Board of Directors will provide additional and evolving content definitions in aid of this direction.
Our challenge to you is to experience the feel of participation rather than just looking. COE will respond to your needs and desires for value add, as we ride the wave together all while Making the Leap.

Digital Manufacturing NC Survey
The Digital Manufacturing NC DPC is once again conducting an NC survey for COE Anaheim. Spending a few minutes filling out the survey enables Dassault and IBM to better understand and respond to the needs and trends of the CATIA manufacturing family. Jim Barkelew and Mark Chitjian will present the survey results at the DPC sessions in Anaheim.
For a copy of the survey, please e-mail Mark Chitjian at cool1@us.ibm.com, or pick one up at the COE NC-1 breakout session Monday afternoon at COE 2001 Spring.
