Cal State L.A. Students Visit Dassault Systemes

By Virgil Seaman, Dept Chair Department of Technology, California State University, Los Angeles

On June 21, 12 students and two faculty members from the Department of Technology at California State University, Los Angeles participated in a field trip to Dassault Systemes in Woodland Hills, CA. The students, who are enrolled in an advanced solid modeling class during the Spring Quarter at Cal State L.A. made the visit to the North American headquarters for Dassault Systemes and were hosted by three application engineers who graduated from the Department of Technology.

The tour included a walk through of their facilities, an overview of Product Lifec ycle Management (PLM) and demonstrations by seven applications engineers on various workbenches such as: DMU Navigator/Fitting Simulation/Space Analysis, Tubing Design, Knowledgeware, Prismatic Machining and an overview of PDM (SMARTEAM). During lunch, students were treated to more demonstrations and case studies of how Application Engineers are working with aerospace and automotive companies around North America to integrate CATIA V5, DELMIA, SMARTEAM and ENOVIA. Finally, Dr. Seaman gave an overview of COE and how students might participate as student volunteers at the upcoming conference in Seattle, Washington.

The trip to Woodland Hills greatly enhanced student's understanding of PLM and brought more relevance to what they are learning in the classroom working with CATIA V5.
