Academia Program at COE Spring 2002 …Terrific!
The COE Spring 2002 Conference & TechniFair in Palm Springs is now history and was a great event. With so many different sessions at a typical conference, it is impossible to attend every breakout session one might wish to attend, and the academic sessions were no exception.
The academic community within COE offered some exceptional information that was well received and most informative. As has been the case in the past, a lot of attention is focused on V4 to V5 migration and interoperability issues. These areas are also of interest to the academic institutions that are a part of COE and the H.E.A.T. program.
The first academic session, entitled "V4 to V5 Conversion: College of Aeronautics and Northrop Grumman - Part 2," was well-attended and very well-received. George Kizner and Donald O'Keefe presented advances made at the College of Aeronautics since COE Fall 2001. This session illustrated the great possibilities that exist when the industry and academia partner come together to find solutions to common problems. This session was also indicative of the willingness of academic institutions to go places they've never been and produce good results and excellent insights.
Next up was "DELMIA V5 inspect" with Bill Reiter from Oregon State University and Roy Smolky from DELMIA. This session also illustrated the inherent possibilities that exist when industry and academia partner converge with each other. This session also pointed out the fact that DELMIA is available to H.E.A.T. participating institutions in addition to CATIA.
Craig Miller and a team of students from Purdue made an excellent presentation entitled "Design Collaboration Utilizing ENOVIA Portal and SMARTEAM Solutions," where they illustrated the ability for cross platform collaboration in a multi-CAD environment. The students brought an extremely well-developed and well-prepared presentation. The presentation also showcased the skills possessed by students in our institutions of higher education.
The last session was delivered by Virgil Seaman and Rolondo Mendez from California State University in Los Angeles along with Richard Cozzens from Southern Utah University. Their presentation was entitled "Infusing CATIA V5 and Team PDM into the Curriculum." This session was also indicative of the wealth of talent available in H.E.A.T. institutions and the inroads these institutions have established in areas like collaboration. The team presented an interesting and informative session illustrating the possibilities available through the use of Team PDM as well as some of the difficulties in its deployment.
The academic committee was pleased to be able to offer these excellent and informative breakout sessions. The committee is also excited about future conferences and the sessions that will be presented. A key goal of the academic community within COE is to establish additional industry partnerships to investigate issues of concern to both parties.
The academic committee was also briefed on the progress of the student edition of CATIA V5. IBM-PLM and Dassault Systemes are currently developing the student package, and we hope to see it made available for our students in the fall.
The H.E.A.T. Program for colleges (and now high schools) offers for curriculum use, the following benefits:
