    Dassault Systèmes and IBM Strengthen Their Strategic Partnership to Accelerate PLM Growth in the SMB Market
    Partners streamline channel management model in selected European countries and the United States

    Dassault Systèmes and IBM announced implementation of a new channel management model designed to improve organizational efficiency and help IBM Business Partners better capture the growing PLM opportunities in the small and medium-sized business (SMB) market. While IBM will continue to provide end-to-end, global PLM solutions, Dassault Systèmes will be responsible for operation of the sales channel of IBM PLM Business Partners in the SMB market in selected European countries and in the U.S.

    Midmarket manufacturers will increase PLM spend at 16% CAGR* through 2008, according to an AMR report. The new Channel Management Provider (CMP) organization has been established jointly by IBM and Dassault Systèmes to streamline their support to IBM Business Partners in the PLM market and help accelerate the transition of small and medium sized customers from CAD to full PLM implementations. In this new organization, Dassault Systèmes will be in charge of the operational management (sales management, channel enablement and marketing programs) in the U.S, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Russia and the CIS countries (Commonwealth of Independent States), leveraging the success of the model already in place in France, Belgium, Monaco, and Luxembourg.

    This is the first of a series of agreements aimed at strengthening and transforming the IBM-Dassault Systèmes partnership to maximize the value of their PLM offerings. This will help customers, included SMBs, accelerate their On Demand Business transformation of which Product Lifecycle Management is a key component and will help IBM and Dassault Systèmes increase their global PLM market share.

    In this new model, the contractual relationship between IBM and its Business Partners in the PLM area remains unchanged as they continue to be IBM Business Partners. IBM will continue to have the overall responsibility of Marketing, Sales and Support of its PLM portfolio of solutions.

    DELMIA Automation for Control Engineers in V5R15
    Tools for users to digitally define, control, and monitor automated systems

    DELMIA Automation enables programming of different Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and validation of this logic against a virtual machine, a cell, or an entire line and the performance analysis of these systems. With time and cost considerations putting pressure on new product introductions, PLC programming can no longer be seen as an isolated, independent function of moving a product forward on to the shop floor. With DELMIA Automation you can optimize your engineering process by allowing your control department to work (earlier in the development process) in parallel and share information with your mechanical and electrical departments.

    During the ramp-up of production lines, as well as in the machine building business, time to ramp-up and risk of error have become crucial factors. DELMIA Automation helps you cut ramp-up time significantly by catching logic errors well before the ramp-up, evaluate PLC program changes on the virtual equipment instead of taking risks on the real equipment and allow pre-commissioning with real PLC. DELMIA Automation’s offerings include the following tools:

    DELMIA Automation LCM Studio
    LCM Studio is a PLC programming environment using the standard languages defined in the IEC61131-3 standard. Users can create and re-use pre-defined control logic blocks. LCM Studio makes the PLC program independent of the hardware. The resulting PLC program is downloaded to a targeted PLC through a dedicated PLC Setup. PLC Setup is developed by or in close collaboration with the major PLC providers (Schneider Electric, OMRON, Siemens and others) using the V5 open platform (CAA V5).

    DELMIA Automation Smart Device Builder
    Smart Device Builder turns your 3D CAD models (CATIA, Solidworks, UGS, ProE, Solidedge, and others) into actuators and sensors in defining kinematics/tasks, internal behavior and electrical I/Os. The internal device behavior is programmed using the languages supported by LCM Studio making the device internal behavior definition easy for control engineers. The internal behavior can also be used to create default and abnormal conditions to validate how the PLC program would react to such conditions. Smart devices can then be assembled to build the complete virtual equipment with the complete set of I/Os.

    DELMIA Automation Controlled System Simulator
    Controlled System Simulator allows the user to simulate, to debug, and to validate a complete PLC program against virtual equipment before any real equipment is even built. The PLC program can be loaded to a virtual PLC or to the real PLC. Users just need to map the PLC program I/Os defined with LCM Studio to the virtual equipment I/Os defined with the Smart Device Builder and then define the simulation environment. The simulation environment is defined by an input part flow (source and sink) and such stochastic distributions for creation times and part types. A production system analysis and reporting can then be generated providing part centric and resource centric statistics:

    • Resource: average utilization of resource, total busy time, total idle time, average content, wait time.
    • Part: number of parts created, total number of parts entering a resource, total number of parts exiting a resource, production rate, total parts processed.

    DELMIA Automation PLC Setup
    PLC Setup (one per PLC provider/type) downloads a PLC program developed with LCM Studio to the real PLC:

    • Compile to the PLC native code and transfer to the real PLC.
    • Develop by PLC vendor using CAA V5, to guarantee the downloaded program and shorten support time for new PLC hardware.
    • Integrate into DELMIA Automation V5 desktop so control and maintenance engineers can download, run, stop, and debug within the same environment.

    Using DELMIA Automation Controlled System Simulator with the real PLC
    Once the PLC program is downloaded to the real PLC using the correct DELMIA Automation PLC Setup, the Controlled System Simulator can be used to link the real PLC and the virtual equipment using open connectivity (OPC). The users can define the simulation environment as previously described and perform production system analysis and reporting. Operations can be created with the real Human Machine Interface (HMI) connected to the real PLC. The DELMIA Automation Controlled System Simulator can be used for virtual startup, virtual commissioning with the end users, and operation training.

    So Many Solutions in One Little Package

    “You need to get out to the remote office.” Those words can keep you up nights. They can mean a lot of time spent taking notes that have to be translated into your CAD files and how many times have you sat there scratching your head trying to remember what that notation meant?

    It can also mean wasting time fighting with an inadequate machine, trying to imitate a workstation, to get the work done. There are some good units out there, but the more demanding your application and designs, the harder you push the machine’s limitations, resulting in out-of-memory errors and long waits for models to render.

    A good portable workstation is a good investment if you spend a lot of time working from remote sites, but it has some limitations such as file versioning.     IBM and Network Appliance Relationship Delivers New Product Offerings for Small and Medium Sized Businesses
    Company Focused on Meeting Growing SMB Market Need for Simple Information on Demand Solution

    IBM announced an array of new storage offerings that further broadens its portfolio of solutions expressly designed for the fast-growing small and medium sized business (SMB) market.

    The first is an entry-level storage disk offering, the first product resulting from the recent IBM alliance with Network Appliance (NASDAQ:NTAP), followed by a roadmap to introduce an expanded product line in the fourth quarter of 2005.

    The first product resulting from the alliance, the IBM TotalStorage N3700, is designed to offer an economical and robust network attached storage (NAS) solution for small and medium-size businesses of less than 1,000 employees, yet is versatile enough to be used in large, distributed enterprises with remote office and branch office storage requirements. The device also incorporates iSCSI technology, a segment that is tracking the growth of SMB storage and is predicted to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 107% through 2009, according to analyst firm IDC1.

    “The SMB customer segment requires simple, easy to deploy solutions for the data needs of a round-the-clock business environment,” said Barry Rudolph, Vice President Disk Systems, IBM. “Today’s announcement is anticipated to be just the first in a line of open solutions from IBM and NetApp that offer innovative solutions for companies relying on critical information in an on demand world."

    The IBM TotalStorage N3700 is a robust NAS solution scaling up to 16 terabytes designed to deliver the ease and functionality of Internet Protocol attached storage along with the pervasiveness of iSCSI SAN technology. It offers features and functions SMB customers value, including support for disaster recovery, which allows users to mirror data both within the appliance as well as to a remote device.

    Last week, NetApp and IBM announced that the companies planned to work closer together in the virtualization and blade server product segments. The focus is on combining IBM’s storage virtualization technologies and the full line of NetApp® V-Series and FAS storage systems into integrated solutions, signaling the beginning of efforts to collaborate to exploit the synergies between the companies’ respective virtualization technologies.

    NetApp will also join IBM as one of nine founding members in the new Blade.org industry community. The community was conceived to enhance the relationships between the founding members and to serve as a catalyst for the industry to create new blade technology. NetApp is already providing back-end storage systems for IBM eServer® BladeCenter™.

    Storage Archive for Data Retention
    For companies facing compliance challenges, IBM is also announcing the availability of the TotalStorage DR550 Express, a single logical storage archive system providing non-erasable and non rewriteable policy-based storage management. The new offering is designed to be easy to install, configure and operate, to help address the needs of small and medium businesses facing growing data retention requirements, including requirements driven by emerging government and industry regulations. The device, which scales from one to 56 terabytes, offers encryption technology which can help protect data in the event of theft as well data replication technology to protect information in the event of a disruption.

    SAN Starter Kit
    Rounding out today's offerings for the SMB market, IBM is introducing the SAN Starter Kit to help small business customers consolidate their storage into a single place, in a manner that is accessible and sharable by servers throughout the business. The SAN Starter Kit is designed for xSeries environments and includes an IBM TotalStorage Storage Switch L10 and dual-controller IBM TotalStorage DS400 Express disk storage for an entry-level Fibre Channel solution for workgroup storage applications such as email servers, collaborative databases, and web serving. It will also include a detailed step-by-step Install Guide to help customers install their storage networking solution quickly and easily.

    The IBM TotalStorage N3700 will be generally available in late August with prices starting at $50,000. The DR550 is available today with prices starting around $45,000. The SAN Starter Kit is also available today and is priced at $16,376. All products are available with worldwide service and support, including lending options through IBM Global Financing, from IBM and IBM business partners.

    The latest release, SimDesigner 2005 r3 for CATIA V5R14, includes many new capabilities and significant enhancements for increased product development efficiency.     SimDesigner Suspension (SDS)

Using load transfer from SDS, analysts can automatically add more accurate boundary conditions based on actual simulation results.
