Inside COE
Bulletin! Bulletin! COE will be Starting a Series of Teleconferences!
The COE Board of Directors is constantly looking for ways to add value to your COE membership. We will be soliciting your input to identify your current 'hot' issues and we will select one of those timely issues as the subject of a teleconference conducted by a leader in the field being addressed. We are kicking off this series with the timely topic of Geometric/Knowledge Modeling Challenges. Our speaker will be John M. Switlik from Boeing Commercial Airplane Company a renowned expert in his field. This teleconference will preview his Fall 2003 COE conference presentation.
The first teleconference will focus on the fact that one puzzle has been: Why does computing seem so hard to do? Despite the best efforts of many, there seems to be no consistent process to ensure successful implementation. Why do these issues seem to be more prevalent in advanced and knowledge systems? Switlik will talk about a few computational issues, especially as they relate to dealing with geometry and knowledge. Some of these problems are inherent to computing and ought to be handled like the weather. We cannot manage these away; we can and ought to make provisions for controlling them. Switlik will provide examples of mechanisms that are necessary and will address how this area of research and development is important to COE members.
John M. Switlik (Associate Technical Fellow, Boeing, Commercial Airplane, Wichita Define) interests cover a broad spectrum: computational support for applied science, mathematics, and management; lifecycle and veracity control for system, application, and domain engineering; integration, use, and quality of computational knowledge. He has active involvement with applied research with Phantom Works and University cohorts that emphasizes the characteristics of the quasi-empirical approaches required for reliable systems that are consistent, predictable, provable, stable, standard, and capable. With a Professor Emeritus, Mathematics, Switlik has been exploring the basis for modern mathematical analysis as applied with the computational metaphor. He received his M.A. and B.A degrees from the University of Arizona in economics with a focus on analysis (both quantitative and qualitative).

Insta-Poll: Results and Next Topic
We want your feedback. Every month we will be asking you a different question on topics concerning your Dassault Systemes software installation, your experiences, or to help us improve COE member benefits. Next month we'll provide the results to our August question and introduce a new question.
Results of the July online poll:
Do you plan to take a Dassault Systemes Certification test?:

COE, IBM and Dassault Systemes to Honor Leading Edge PLM Implementers and Visionaries
To acknowledge COE members that have achieved significant business results through their organizations' adoption of product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions, COE, the international organization uniting the users of Dassault Systems software solutions, in association with International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) and Dassault Systèmes, introduced the PLM Enterprise of the Year Award. The Award, determined by a committee comprised of PLM vendors, industry analysts and trade media, will be announced at the COE Spring 2004 Conference & TechniFair to be held in Miami Beach, Florida April 26-29.
The PLM Enterprise of the Year Award will recognize successful PLM implementations and serve as a model for fellow COE members and IBM and Dassault Systèmes customers seeking to increase profitability by expanding to markets centered on new, innovative products, while reducing development, manufacturing, and warranty costs.
All nomination forms must be received by April 1, 2004. To find out more about what it take to win, prizes, and how to enter, visit http://www.coe.org/events/03spring/plm_awards.cfm.
Speak Directly with Key Industry Executives and the COE Board of Directors at the COE Open Forum
The COE Open Forum, scheduled Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at the COE 2003 Conference & TechniFair is an opportunity for COE member companies to speak directly with a panel of executives from Dassault Systemes, and IBM-PLM, and subsidiary representatives, and with the COE Board of Directors. The Forum panel addresses matters submitted in advance of conference, on site, and from the floor, and discusses plans, ideas, and future strategy with the audience.
How can you make use of the Forum? By submitting your topics of interest to COE early so that IBM, Dassault Systemes, et al have time to formulate the best discussion and send the right people to address them. This is an opportunity for COE members to submit comments, concerns, ideas, questions, and hot topics for discussion about CATIA/DELMIA/ENOVIA/SMARTEAM capability, implementation, future development directions, partnerships, and benefits. Subjects strategic in nature are encouraged. Product enhancements can be addressed through the Development Planning Council (DPC) meetings at the COE 2003 Conference & TechniFair, or through the DPC SER database process at www.coe.org.
How do I make a submission?
Please visit http://coe.org/events/openforum04/questions.cfm to submit your ideas.
