COE Spring 2003 Conference & TechniFair Wrap Up

Take the Lead…Deliver with PLM
March 30-April 2
Hyatt Regency New Orleans
New Orleans, Louisiana

Nearly 1,100 users, Dassault Systemes and IBM-PLM representatives, and third-party vendor representatives gathered in New Orleans for the COE Spring 2003 Conference & TechniFair-the largest international event dedicated to the CATIA®, ENOVIATM, DELMIATM, and SMARTEAMTM user community. The focus of the event was to help users "take the lead" and attendees divided their time between the many professional enrichment opportunities to do just that, including networking events, exciting keynotes, nearly 200 technical and training sessions, and the wall-to-wall solutions of the TechniFair. See attendees and speakers in action by visiting the full event photo gallery.

Featured Speakers Kick Things Off
It was standing room only in the Monday morning general session as attendees gathered to hear Francois Castaing, former Executive Vice President, DaimlerChrysler, explain how Dassault Systemes and IBM technologies were key to Chrysler's 1990s turnaround. Then Bernard Charles, Dassault Systemes President, took the stage to address recent and future developments in PLM technology and how PLM will help customers "take the lead". IBM's Ed Petrozelli shared case studies of companies successfully implementing PLM into their organizations. Finally, Bruce Van Nus of Dassault Systemes discussed successful PLM implementation strategies and processes.

In Tuesday morning's general session, Dave Burdick of Collaborative Visions moderated a CATIA V5 Roundtable. The panelists addressed critical deployment issues and recommended strategies for migration from V4 to V5. Tuesday afternoon offered an opportunity for user to ask questions of Dassault Systemes and IBM representatives on the Open Forum Panel.

On Wednesday, Jeff Scheisser outlined Cessna Aircraft's strategies in developing a new personal jet, the "Citation Mustang". And Peter Hart, Georgia Tech, discussed PLM integration at NASA Langley and the Georgia Tech PLM Competency Center.

Breakout Sessions
The conference schedule featured nearly 200 user-focused, educational breakout sessions delivered by speakers in every industry, from both small and large enterprises worldwide, and covering everything you need on product process, functionality, systems, support, and implementation. The speaker line-up featured more than 40 companies, including Boeing, Purdue University, BMW, Raytheon, Cessna, Johnson Controls, and more!

Executive Forum
The COE Executive Forum thread provided an opportunity for managers and executives to learn how best to deploy PLM as part of the competitiveness of product development. Speakers included IBM and Dassault Systemes executives, such as Tom Kilkenny and Joel Lemke, as well as industry leaders from Purdue University, Boeing, Lionheart Solutions, United Airlines, and Cessna Aircraft.

COE Education and Training
The COE training session line-up provided in-depth and guided hands-on access to specific aspects of the generally available Dassault Systemes suite or complementary software. Attendees gained valuable skills to take back to their jobs through the detailed product information, best practices and operational process methods, and live demonstrations.

TechniFair
In addition to the unique educational opportunities available at the conference, attendees were able to visit and chat with more than 40 vendors in the COE TechniFair. TechniFair visitors participated in everything from hands-on demos and product test-driving, to the TechniFair Tournament, where fabulous prizes were awarded, including a Palm Theater Portable DVD, and X-Box, a portable TV, and an American Express Gift Certificate, just to name a few. Visit the photo gallery to see all the footage.

Networking
And no COE conference experience would be complete without the many planned and informal networking opportunities, where attendees mingled with their peers in relaxed social settings, like conference lunches and refreshment breaks, the Sunday Conference Orientation and Welcome Reception, sponsored by Microsoft and Intel, the TechniFair Grand Opening, and the activities and festivities of the TechniBash!

Award Winners
Former Executive Vice President of DaimlerChrysler, Francois Castaing, was inducted into COE's College of Fellows. COE's Fellow award is awarded to individuals who have contributed greatly to the CAx/PDM industry.

James Barkelew, Lockheed Martin, and Mark Chitjian, IBM, co-chairs of the Numerical Control Development Planning Council, were awarded the COE Award of Merit for their years of work in helping to prepare the COE conference.

The Top Gun competition, sponsored by MSC, Rand, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, and COE allowed users to compete for prizes and to test their skills at developing the most accurate and correctly-structured three dimensional model, in the least amount of time.

In third place were Donald Vetter of Black and Decker (in the V5 category) and Bill Marceau of Shaw Aero Devices (in the V4 category). In second place were Ivan Harris of Amcor (in the V5 category) and DJ Ninagawa of INCS, Inc. (in the V4 category).

The grand prize, first place winners were Janelle Beczak of Cessna (in the V5 category) and Changsoo Suh of Hyundai Motors (in the V4 category).

IIUG to Host Sessions at COE Fall 2003 Conference & TechniFair

The ICAD International User Group (IIUG) will be hosting several sessions at the COE at the Seattle COE in October. ICAD is recognized as the leading Knowledge-based engineering (KBE) solution for the capture and automation of proprietary customer design and manufacturing processes, particularly in the aerospace and automotive industries. The goal of the IIUG is to promote the use and best practices of KBE throughout all Industries.

Engineers and designers have been using ICAD to design products since 1985 and regularly report process time reductions in excess of 90%. ICAD users automate their product designs and manufacturing processes by storing and accessing all the required knowledge and best practices relating to their design intent, functionality, engineering and manufacturing rules, standards, safety codes, legislative compliance and many more criteria from within their ICAD product model and ICAD defined knowledge base. ICAD is a highly proven technology employed by such renowned knowledge-based organizations as: Airbus Industrie, Boeing, BMW, Corus, Ford, Jaguar and General Motors.

ICAD is developed and maintained by Knowledge Technologies International, Inc. KTI, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dassault Systemes as of November 2002. KTI, Inc. and Dassault Systemes have been working together to streamline the best Knowledge Based Engineering processes into the Dassault Family line of products. This would provide Dassault Systemes Products with unrivaled functionality and integrated KBE capabilities.

The IIUG has been instrumental to the growth and success of ICAD and KBE within industry today. Because KTI, Inc. customers have always been willing to get involved with ICAD product development, the ICAD system has made great strides in its depth and breath of functionality over the past 15 years. The COE forum will provide both IIUG and COE members the opportunity to get involved with discussions between KTI, Inc and Dassault Systemes about product strategy, requirements, and future directions. Only through these discussions, can the KBE technology continue to grow in usage, functionality, and availability.

COE Announces PLM Enterprise of the Year for 2003

To acknowledge customers that have achieved significant business results through their organizations' adoption of product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions, CATIA Operator's Exchange (COE) user group in partnership with IBM and Dassault Systemes have announced the PLM Enterprise of the Year award. The award, which will be selected by a committee comprised of vendors, IT analysts and press, will be announced at the Fall 2003 COE conference in Seattle on September 29th.

The PLM Enterprise of the Year award will not only recognize success, but will also serve as a model for fellow IBM and Dassault Systemes customers looking to increase shareholder value by expanding their markets centered on new, innovative products, while reducing development, manufacturing and warranty costs. The award will be presented to the COE member that demonstrates the best use of PLM technologies to:

  • Synchronize and manage multiple business processes, including data and process integration with other enterprise applications such as ERP, SCM, or CRM.

  • Collaborate with suppliers and customers.

  • Show tangible and intangible benefits, such as increased innovation, reduced development or manufacturing costs, improved product quality and increased sales.

The winner will be allowed to present on its PLM implementation at the Fall 2003 COE conference. In addition, START magazine and Desktop Engineering will offer free subscriptions. The COE organization will provide the winner with a trophy and a free 1 year membership. Finally, IBM's PLM Integrated Industry Solutions team will perform a complimentary two-day Virtual Product Innovation assessment on the winner's PLM environment and provide feedback on how this company can be even more successful in the future.

"PLM is not an overnight implementation, but that shouldn't scare companies into thinking that its benefits are not obtainable," comments Thomas Kilkenny, vice president sales, IBM Product Lifecycle Management. "Most manufacturers have CAD or PDM already; now it's just a matter of linking those systems to the rest of their IT environment and supply chain. And that's where IBM can help out with software, hardware and services."

The committee that will review the nominees includes:

Dave Burdick, president, Collaborative Visions (CONFIRMED)
Tony Lockwood, editor in chief, Desktop Engineering (CONFIRMED)
Marc Halpern, research director, Gartner Group (TENTATIVE)
Phil Harrison, COE (CONFIRMED)
Michael Jarosik, editor in chief, START Magazine (CONFIRMED)
Thomas Kilkenny, vice president, sales, IBM Product Lifecycle Management (TBD)
Marcelo Lemos, president, Dassault Systemes Americas (TBD)

Francios Castaing Awarded COE Fellowship

When you think about vehicles such as Viper or Prowler, you should also think about the name Francios Castaing. It was Francios' leadership, at DaimlerChrysler Corporation, that led to the development of these and many more amazing vehicles.

As Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Francios is generally credited with bringing CATIA to then Chrysler Corporations. Through subsequent requirements to deliver design information to Chrysler in CATIA from suppliers, CATIA was then spread throughout the American automotive supply chain. By developing platform teams where Engineering, Finance, Purchasing, and Manufacturing developed a vehicle jointly, Castaing laid the foundation for what were would consider PLM today.

Upon leaving DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Francois is still advocating student participation in Math and Science. He is credited with the revitalization of the Detroit Science Center. Also, he on the Advisory Board of Focus: Hope, a Detroit area human and civil rights organization.

In one the highest forms of praise, a former Chrysler Executive, Robert Lutz recently said Francios, "has a bias toward action."
