Meet Scott Baker the New President of COE
In the history of COE, there have been two excellent Presidents; Bill Abramson and Phil Harrison. After a year as President elect, it is finally time for me to take over as President of the COE organization. The Presidency of COE is an honor and a privilege, as well as a daunting task. With such a dedicated group of volunteers, this is a task I am looking forward to. I only hope I can live up to the high standards already set by the past Presidents.
We have just completed an excellent annual conference with almost 1200 attendees and over 60 vendors in the TechniFair. We had a very diverse agenda including presentations by large OEM’s like Ford Motor Company, Boeing, and Bombardier Aerospace. Other areas were represented by sectors such as Loewen a medium size industry, and Delphi, a Tier 1 supplier. There was even a presentation in the Strategic Issues track about the premium yatch industry and their unlikely acceptance of the PLM principles. Thanks to all of our speakers for sharing their experiences with all of us. We also implemented for the first time, the use of PDA’s for conference schedules and the COE University for longer, more in depth classes. It really was an amazing conference.
We now look forward to the Fall Aerospace and Automotive workshops to get a more industry specific view of our issues facing our organizations. But as we all know, COE is a year around organization and there are a lot of things on our agenda. NewsNet, our electronic newsletter which you are now reading, reaches approximately 5000 readers each month. We also have a strong web presence, with our “Ask the Expert” web events conducted on a regular basis, and the COE forum which is a vibrant community of users asking interesting real user questions on the DS suite of tools.
So, where are our growth areas? Where do we go from here? At the annual conference, it seems that we need to look at expanding our educational efforts in the COE University, due to its great success. Also, we are looking into expanding the use of PDA’s for conference abstracts, daily updates, and etc. From a membership point of view, it seems that we need to get the small and medium size industries more involved with the organization. We also need to look for more types of industry or domain specific workshops at other times of the year to meet more of our members needs. Today, we also have more Academic members than ever before. We need to get the youngest users involved in the organization early for a truly lasting organization.
With the maturation of the DS V5 suite of tools, the opportunities for improvements seem to be immense. It is up to us collectively, to explore all of these possibilities to expand our reach while keeping true to our past. I am really looking forward to the challenge.
